Abstract: »Since the 1950s, the punishment of sexual crimes and offences committed by Catholic clerics has undergone changes. Until the 1990s, the canonical penalties are used in a limited proportion, justified in the name of the conversion of the sinner and the avoidance of scandal. Since the end of the 2000s, and especially the 2010s, explicit canonical sanctions, whether judicial or administrative, are more and more used, in the name of justice. This evolution has been imposed on Catholic authorities by social and state pressures, that the Holy See has relayed by prosecuting and punishing criminal and offender clerics. It has huge effects on the way the Church understands its legal order in relations to that of the State one, and on the relations between ordinaries and clerics.« (Source: Revue du droit des religions)
